Terms and Conditions for Driving Lessons

 (Updated 1st January 2023)

Drivetime will conduct driving lessons based on the following terms and conditions until further notice.

PUPIL’S RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. The pupil must be in possession of a valid provisional (or full) driving license that entitles them to drive in the UK.

  1. The pupil must satisfy the requirements of medical fitness to drive, including being able to read a number plate at the prescribed distance (an assessment will be carried out on the first lesson).

  1. The pupil's driving license must be presented to the instructor at the first driving lesson.

  1. The pupil must inform the instructor of any points, endorsements, bans, convictions or restrictions of any kind on their license immediately.

  1. Payments for lessons should be made at the start of each lesson. If the pupil is unable to pay for the lesson, please inform the instructor beforehand and payment will be collected at the beginning of the next lesson. Please do not be more than 2 lessons behind with payments unless this has been previously agreed upon.

  1. The pupil must provide 24 hours notice for lesson cancellations otherwise they may still be charged for the lesson. If a pupil is inconsistent with lessons, or cancel their lessons regularly without proper notice, the instructor has the right to withdraw their services.

BOOKING OF DRIVING TESTS

  1. Driving test bookings should only be made with full consultation with the instructor. If a test booking is made without consultation and permission, then the instructor reserves the right to withdraw the use of their services (both driving lessons and the use of vehicle for the driving test). The final decision as to whether a pupil is ready for a driving test lies solely with the driving instructor.

  1. The normal process in assessing a pupil’s readiness for driving test is through regular “mock driving test" assessments. Once all topics relating to driving are completed, mock tests will be carried out to assess readiness for a driving test. Whilst it will NOT BE NECESSARY for you to pass your mock test in order to apply for the actual driving test, a certain standard must be achieved depending on the current waiting times for local driving test bookings.

  1. When a driving test is booked the pupil must use the instructor reference number. If the instructor reference number is not used and a there is a clash in dates and timing of a driving test, the pupil who has used the instructor reference number will always have priority.

  1. If you are a new pupil who already has a driving test booked, Drivetime will only agree to the use of vehicle on test if the driving is at the required standard. The assessment will be based on how the pupil performs during a “mock driving test".

  1. When a test is booked the pupil should inform the instructor within 3 days of having booked it. This should be by either forwarding the confirmation email or by sending a screenshot of the booking to the instructor.

Note 1

The Driver and Vehicles Standards Agency (DVSA) have recently emphasised to instructors that pupils should not present for driving tests unless they are at a high standard and completely ready for their test. They have stated that failing driving tests will only result in the current long waiting times for booking of driving tests to increase.

They have also stated that instructors will be subject to increased assessments of their ability to teach, if their candidates on test are of poor quality and not test ready. I have therefore had to introduce terms 7 and 8 above as recently there have been pupils who have booked their driving tests without consultation and permission.

When access to the use of an instructor’s vehicle is denied, it is in the interest of the pupil, the examiner and other road users and is a precautionary safety measure. DVSA guidelines do not allow a pupil to take a practical driving test just for the experience.
